Simon Benney: Marathon Man
Anyone undertaking a seven day, 250km (the equivalent of 6 marathons) endurance race across the Sahara Desert could be considered a lunatic or even masochist! Well luckily Simon Benney is neither but he is resilient and determined to compete in the toughest footrace on earth - The Marathon Des Sables. He decided to participate in the race over four years ago and consequently began designing the Geosportster Chronograph. He wanted a watch that was design-led but highly resilient and able to combine technology with performance. The iconic Benney Watch design of the interlocking 'shock absorber springs,' which transmit impact away from the movement mechanics - perfect for a long distance endurance runner - was born.
On 1st April 2010 Simon joined a select group of British runners all determined to go the distance. He spent a grueling seven days in the soaring heat and did indeed successfully complete the race. However Simon is not a masochist - he participated in the Marathon des Sables to raise money for two charities close to his heart - the Prince's Trust and Swift Medics.
SWIFT Medics
SWIFT Medics are a voluntary organisation based in Wiltshire who are called out to a range of emergency situations where they provide immediate care, medical advice and additional support at the scene of an incident. Provided on a voluntary basis by a group of local GP's, SWIFT Medics were first on the scene when Simon's son Todd was involved in a life threatening accident when he was knocked down by a car last year. In grateful recognition for saving Todd's life Simon is determined to raise as much money as possible for this incredible team of doctors.
